Salon Studio vs Square Appointments
Square Appointments is general-purpose scheduling with a genuinely free entry plan that's paid for through Square's mandatory processing fees, while Salon Studio is salon-specific, white-label booking software at $50/month flat on your own domain.
If you already run your checkout on Square hardware, Square Appointments is the path of least resistance — and the free plan is real. The trade-offs are that Square is built for every industry rather than salons specifically, your booking site carries Square's branding by default, and every dollar you take must flow through Square's processing. Here is the honest version of how the two compare.

Choose Square Appointments if…
- You're just starting out and want $0 software while you build a clientele.
- You already use Square's POS, readers, or terminals and want booking in the same ecosystem.
- You want one vendor for payments, payroll, marketing, and scheduling.
- Generic scheduling covers your needs and brand presentation isn't a priority yet.
Choose Salon Studio if…
- You want a booking site that's entirely your brand on your own domain — not a square.site address.
- You want software built only for salons, not adapted from generic scheduling.
- You want a predictable flat $50/month instead of a model funded by processing fees on every payment.
- You want to choose your own payment setup — any terminal, any processor, or optional Stripe payments at Stripe's standard rates with 0% markup from us.

The real cost: what "free" means at volume
On Square's Free plan, a salon taking $10,000/month in card-present payments pays roughly $260 in percentage fees plus 15¢ per transaction — call it about $300/month — and that processing is mandatory, with no option to shop for a better rate or use hardware you already own. That's the deal: free software, captive payments. It can still be the right deal for a new solo stylist with low volume. Salon Studio inverts it: the software costs $50/month, and payments are entirely your choice — keep your current terminal and rates, or switch on online payments through your own Stripe account, where you pay Stripe's standard 2.9% + 30¢ per online card payment (as of June 2026) and Salon Studio adds nothing. On rates alone, the honest comparison is mixed: Stripe's online rate is lower than Square's 3.3% + 30¢ online, but higher than Square's 2.6% + 15¢ in person. We've never claimed cheaper processing — the difference is that with us it's your choice, in-person payments never run through us, and we make nothing on your payments either way.
Get found on Google — at your own address
Most new clients start with a search like "balayage in your town," and what ranks for that search is a web page on a domain. With Square's default setup, that page is a square.site address — it works, but the search presence it builds sits on Square's domain, and moving later means starting over. A Salon Studio site is your own domain from day one, with SEO and structured data built in, so those searches can land directly on your booking site and your Google Business Profile can point straight at it. A client who finds you that way costs nothing, and the ranking compounds on a domain you keep for the life of your business.
A booking page should advertise your salon
Square's default booking site lives at a square.site address and looks like what it is: a scheduling utility. That's fine for getting started, but every client visit is a branding moment you're giving away. With Salon Studio, your booking site is your website — your domain, your colors, your logo, confirmation emails from your salon's name — and your client list stays yours to export whenever you want. The salon down the street can use the same software; nobody will ever know you do.
Frequently asked questions
Is Square Appointments really free?
The Free plan genuinely has no subscription fee — but it isn't free to run. Every payment must be processed by Square at 2.6% + 15¢ in person or 3.3% + 30¢ online on the Free plan (as of June 2026), and you can't bring another processor. The software is free; the payments are how Square gets paid.
Can I use my own domain with Square Appointments?
Not by default — Square booking sites live on a Square-branded square.site address, and custom domains are sold separately through Square Online. Salon Studio includes a white-label website on your own custom domain in the flat $50/month price.
Is Salon Studio better for salons than Square Appointments?
It depends on what you're optimizing for. Square wins on free entry, integrated card hardware, and its POS ecosystem. Salon Studio is built only for salons and wins on white-label branding, your own domain, flat pricing that doesn't route through processing fees, and freedom to choose your payment processor.
How do new clients find my salon with Salon Studio?
Through search, mostly. Every Salon Studio site ships with SEO and structured data built in, on your own custom domain — so searches like "balayage in your town" can land directly on your booking site, and your Google Business Profile can link straight to it. Clients who find you on Google cost nothing, and the search ranking those pages earn accrues to your domain rather than to a square.site address.
Does Salon Studio require a payment processor?
No. Payments in Salon Studio are optional: connect your own Stripe account and clients can pay at booking at Stripe's standard rates (2.9% + 30¢ per online card payment as of June 2026) with 0% markup from us, or take payments however you do today — cash, tap, or any terminal you already own. In-person payments never run through Salon Studio at all.
